What You May Not Know Yet About The Search Engines - By: RingJohn, Posted on: 2007-12-08

When searching for information on the web, most online users turn to the search engines. The search engines provide search results in a matter of seconds. With the search engines, you don’t have to enter the exact URL address of the website that contains the information you are looking for. The search engines make searching a whole lot easier.

Imagine web browsing without the search engines. You have to memorise millions of URLs to get the information you are looking for. The search engines ease the burden of online searching. They provide the most relevant results for almost any type of query. Their results are ranked according to their relevance to the keyword or phrase searched for.

Until now, the search engines never fail to amaze web marketers. The search engines should be on the top list of must attract sites on the web. A website that is ranked high on the search engines will receive more traffic. It is vital, therefore, that a website be marketed on the search engines to be able to reach its target market.

How The Search Engines Work

The search engines get information from the entire web. They index the information they get and rank them according to importance every time a search query is made. The search engines use robots or crawlers – oftentimes referred to as the spiders – to look for new information from the web. All new information gathered by these crawlers are saved on the search engine database.

When an online user search for a particular information, the search engines go through their database and pick the information that relates to the keyword entered. If your website contains the information searched for, it will appear on the search results.

Aside from the information gathered by the robots, the search engines also use information submitted to them. When a relevant information is submitted to the search engines, it is kept on the database and indexed to be used on the search results.

Types Of Search Engines

There are basically three types of search engines. First are the crawler based search engines. These are the search engines that use robots in gathering and indexing information. Second are the human based search engines. These are the search engines that indexed information manually submitted to them. Third are the combination of the crawler and human based search engines. These are the search engines that rely on both the information submitted to them and those that are gathered by the robots or crawlers.

Websites need to be marketed on the search engines (irregardless of the type) to ensure maximum online exposure. Knowing the search engines is the first step in search engine marketing.
