The most remarkable region in the Eastern Europe - By: Mathew Petrenko, Posted on: 2008-04-08

Ukraine is a unitary state situated in the south of Central Europe. Every province which included into that country has its own local authorities. The capital of Ukraine – Kiev and Sevastopol have the status of separate districts too. Ukraine became a semi-presidential republic only several years ago. That is the consequence of an orange revolution of 2004. The system of government in the country has been changed with the power redistributed between various branches of power. Ukraine borders on Bulgaria, Romania, Poland, Moldova and Hungary form the west, Turkey form the south; the Russian border is the longest one it is from North and East. There are 2 mountain systems in Ukraine: Carpathian and Crimea, Crimea mountains are younger and lower. The imaginary line which is considered to be the border between the eastern and the western parts of the country is river Dnieper. Owing to the river Ukraine gets the most of its hydroelectric energy. Every winter there is much snow there but the climate is quite soft and temperature is not very low. The rain is frequently observed in summertime commonly but in general, summers are quite dry.

Thanks to favorable terms, Ukraine is famous for its quality soils and significantly developed agriculture. Ukraine is believed to be one of the largest exporters of sugar. In common, the country develops a lot of produce: maize, corn, vegetables, fruit, etc. Kiev is one of the oldest cities in Europe. It was established nearly in the 5th century and has got long and interesting history. All the Slavic civilizations have come from that city. It was founded as a little trade town but it has grown into the fabulous modern megapolis. After it was conquered by Mongols in the 13th century and completely destroyed, it lost its eminence for a long time. Significant impact on the development was produced by the foundation of the Soviet Union. The Ukrainian Soviet Republic assisted Kiev to regain prominence. In 2001 there lived 2,611,300 people in Kiev (census data). Women constituted 53 percents and males 47 percents. We can not even approximately estimate the amount of different ethnic groups that are included into this amazing city. More than 120 ethnic groups live there. During the 70s and 80s, the city saw stable growth in population that in turn resulted in the development of real estate. During the time of the sovereignty Kiev has been changed significantly. Now there are a lot of high-class luxury hotels and expensive restaurants among old buildings of the Soviet era.

Ukraine economics gains power after the time of post Soviet troubles. Today Ukraine is very respectable country that is known not as a region of the Soviet Union, but as independent country. All the countries included into WTO are pleasantly inviting Ukraine to become a participant of that union.
