The Truth About Home Cooking - By: MIKE SELVON, Posted on: 2007-10-12

Home cooking brings to mind memories of family gathered around a table as a scrumptious meal was placed before them. Sunday afternoon dinners of home made entrees and desserts to satisfy any palate.

The idea of home-made cooking and comfort foods is vastly appealing. Yet, the frozen food industry shows us time and time again that many people are turning to microwavable meals to satisfy their hunger pangs.

We do not have time and there are some people who do not know how easy it is to cook a meal at home. It does not take a professional chef to whip up a tasty and easy dinner.

It also does not have to take hours on end. Yes, it is easier to stop by the local drive-thru and grab a meal but it will not be as healthy or taste quite the same as if you did it yourself.

Home cooking does not have to be about hours slaving away over a hot stove. It does not have to be about elaborate recipes that call for ingredients only found in obscure foreign markets.

It is about preparing dishes that appeal to you and your family. Find recipes that you enjoy eating and are easy to prepare. It can be healthy cooking as well.

It does not have to be fried chicken or bland steamed broccoli. There are dozens of websites on the internet that offer free recipes as well as helpful hints and tips for preparation.

There is a reason home-style restaurants are popular. They offer common regional dishes that are easy to recognize and simple to prepare. Take a cue from those restaurants and try simple dishes at first.

One of the most popular meals served in homes is the traditional macaroni and cheese casserole. It is a hit with kids and adults alike, not to mention it is easy to prepare and there are hundreds of recipe variations found on the internet.

Home cooking can help by solving two problems families face today. The first is a lack of communication and family time. You would be surprised how mandatory family time around the dinner table can open up communication with our children.

Studies have shown that families who eat together, without being in front of a television set, have better family skills than those that do not. The second problem we face is how unhealthy our diets are.

Fast food and calorie laden frozen foods are killing us. Home cooking can help alleviate part of the obesity problem by allowing us greater control over how the food is prepared.

So the next time you and your family are hungry, consider making something together and sharing it at the dinner table. You might be surprised to see the difference in how you feel.
