The Roca-Fun With Rocawear - By: Christine Layug, Posted on: 2008-03-07

They say that the only clothing line that represents the hip hop community is the rocawear clothing line. It stands as the only clothing line that speaks the voice of the urban community, the clothing line that forges music from feelings and emotions, and the clothing line that truly shows the true colors of the hip hop nation.
The rocawear is among of the many urban clothing lines that the urban community wears to show their style and fashion in the streets. But what else do we know about the rocawear clothing line?
The rocawear is an urban clothing line founded in 1999 by three men named Damon Dash, Karee “Biggs” Burke, and Jay-Z, which were also the heads of a hip hop label named Roc-a-Fella Records, in which the rocawear got its name.
Its popularity among the urban community has brought an annual sale of over $700 million to the infamous clothing line.
The rocawear urban clothing line was so famous and so popular among the urban community that it’s founders decided on expanding their clothing lines into other clothing line and accessories such as rocawear children, rocawear juniors, rocawear socks and sandals, rocawear leather suede and fur outerwear, rocawear handbags and rocawear belts, rocawear lounge wear and big & tall, rocawear headwear, rocawear jewelry, and rocawear sunglasses.
March of 2007, Jay-Z sold the rights to the rocawear brand to Iconix Brand Group, a brand management company that licenses brands to retailers and manufacturers primarily in the apparel, footwear, and apparel accessory industries, for $204 million. Jay-Z still retained his stake in the company and will continue to oversee the marketing, licensing and product development.
But apart from the limelight and popularity, the rocawear also suffered its fair share of shame and disgrace. January 17, 2007, allegations were made of raccoon-dog fur being used in two styles of jackets, rocawear pulled all of the garments from the department stores where this product was shipped. A representative of rocawear stated the company was unaware the fur was being used and had notified manufactures it was not permitted. The items, in addition to being pulled from department stores, were also removed from the brands official website.
