How can a person possibly decide which shape they want their diamond to have? Today there are so many styles to choose from and if you can only have one it can be a difficult decision. Most people think that a diamond's cut is referring to the way it is shaped, but actually it is referring to the artistry involved in giving it its shape.

If diamonds are cut incorrectly and the faceting is not perfectly symmetrical, it will be less brilliant in its reflection of light, thus diminishing its look and value.

The round shaped diamond has long been the most popular It is the most researched shape. Diamond cutters have experimented thoroughly with theories of light and mathematical calculations to obtain the most fire and brilliance from the round shape.

Round diamonds are used in many different jewelry pieces. Small round diamonds are often used in pave, or bead settings. This means the diamonds are set in clusters or rows with almost no metal showing, giving the effect of a continuous stream of diamond.

The princess cut diamond is probably the second most popular shape. It is used widely for engagement rings. It has pointed corners and is usually square shaped, but can be rectangular. Princess cuts can vary in how square or rectangular they are.

The emerald cut is a rectangular shape. It gets its unique appearance from rectangular facets. This will highlight the clarity of the diamond. The asscher cut is almost identical to the emerald cut, but it is square.

The marquise cut diamond is oval shaped, but pointed at the top and bottom. This cut can maximize the diamonds caret weight and make it appear larger. It is beautiful when set with round or marquise stones on either side.

The brilliance of an oval shaped diamond is similar to a round shape. As with the marquise shape, the oval shape can accentuate long slender fingers giving an exceptional elegant look.

Radiant cut diamonds are a rounded square shape and have trimmed corners. These are popular for jewelry and also look very nice with side stones.

The pear shaped or teardrop diamond has a single point on one end and is rounded on the other. This is a much used choice for a variety of jewelry pieces.

The heart shaped diamond has to be the ultimate representation of love. This is one diamonds shape that can speak for itself.

The cushion shape or pillow cut diamond has been popular for more than a hundred years. Their rounded corners and larger facets give them lots of brilliance.
