The Great Pink City - By: Douglas Scott, Posted on: 2007-10-08

Jaipur also known as the Pink City is the capital of Rajasthan state India.

Jaipur, the pink city is an ancient land of Rajputs. The city has always been enchanting and appealing with its majestic charm. The city palace or royal residence is a blend of the Rajasthani and Mughal styles by projected balconies, arches on slender pillars and entrances. A huge paved courtyard is flanked on three sides by apartments for the royal retainers whose families are at hand to serve as guides.

The palace houses the seven storied Chandra Mahal where the former ruling family still lives, outer courtyard with a museum. The museum houses a rare collection of fascinating weapons, swords of all shapes and sizes

There is also has an Art Gallery with a fine collection of paintings, carpet & rare astronomical works in Arabic, Persian, Latin & Sanskrit, acquired by Sawai Jai Singh II for his study of planets and their movements.

Jaipur is a land of cultural heritage unfolding the legacy of the royal past. It is important to know about the culture, customs and traditions that are followed here. However, Jaipur has joined the parade of metropolitan cities. However there are some traditions and customs in the city, which you will find quite surprising.

The people here celebrate each and every occasion, fairs and festivals, with all gusto and zeal. The festivals of Hindus and Muslims are celebrated.

People prefer to wear bright colour clothes, as if they are compensating for the barren landscape. Women like red, yellow, green and orange with a dazzling work of gold or silver. Tribal Ladies wear loads of silver jewellery even men too can be spotted wearing earrings. The men wear turbans in bright colours.

Amber Fort is 11 km from Jaipur. The Kachchawahas ruled from Amber for seven centuries. With a history so old, it is not unexpected that there is a lot of the past that can be traced in its archaeological history.

The climate of the district is dry and healthy and is subject to extremities of cold and heat during winter and summer respectively, due to proximity to the Thar Desert. The minimum and maximum temperatures recorded in the district vary from 3 to 49 degrees celsius.

Its a land thats a shade different than the rest. The mesmerising gold of its desert. The vibrancy of its fair and festivals. The brilliant hues of the costumes worn by the people. The rich colour of its wildlife Where ever you look youll be greeted by a variety of colours.
