Tehran is positioned at the base of the Alborz mountain range in Northern Iran. It is split into 22 municipal districts. Each municipal district in turn operates its own administrative centre. Tehran literally means the End of the Road.

It has a population of 9 million, with the surrounding metropolitan area included taking that number up to 14 million. These figures make it the biggest city in Iran and also one of the largest in the Middle East.

The Grand Bazaar is where the local goods can be bought. Lovely items of gold and silver jewellery are available. There are also quite a number of boutiques and smaller specialist shops within the city offering a broader range of goods.

It is a diverse and beautiful city combining the ancient civilisation of Iran with modern developments and living.

Tourist attractions such as museums, shopping centres, art galleries and palaces. Leisure facilities for its inhabitants include parks and theatres.

it is strongly advise against all travel to within 100km of the entire Iran and Afghanistan border or to within 10km of the entire Iran border. The Pakistan border area is also insecure and we advise against any travel east of the line running from Bam to Bandar Abbas.

There is a threat from terrorism in Iran. Attacks could be indiscriminate and against civilian targets and could be directed at Western, including British interests.

Islamic law is strictly enforced in Iran. You should respect local customs and sensitivities at all times, especially during the holy month of Ramadan or if you intend to visit religious areas.

No visitor should leave without seeing the truly spectacular sight of the crown jewels held in the vaults of the Central Bank of Iran or the Shahs stunning former residence known as the Green Palace.

The air pollution and terrible traffic are the other joys of visiting Tehran so dont be put off and come and see for yourself.

Although the highest peak in the Alborz Mountain range is an extinct volcano, villagers are still able to hear rumbling from deep within the mountain. It is covered with snow for most of the year. During the winter periods this area makes a great place for skiing and the quality of the snow is recognised globally as being some of the best in the world.
