The largest city in Pennsylvania is Philadelphia, it contains many national historical sites that relate to the United States. Philadelphia is the sixth largest city in the nation, it still maintains a small town feel.

The indoor outdoor Italian Market and Reading Terminal Market are bustling with urban dwellers buying groceries and visitors in search of the perfect Philadelphia cheese steak. High fashion boutiques, Knit Wit, Joan Shepp and Plage Tahiti, are all in the Rittenhouse Square area, and are regarded by locals for designer clothing and accessories. The oldest and second largest diamond district in the country is Jeweller Row.

The traditional heart of the city is Broad and Market streets known as Penns Centre Square, where City Hall now stands.

There is no shortage of live entertainment, ranging from the Philly Pops to the Mellon Jazz Festival. There are also summer concerts of popular and classical music. The citys rock and roll tradition began in 1955 with Bill Haley and the Comets. Smaller bands hit great venues like the TLA on South Street, the Trocadero in Chinatown, and Phillys newest and brightest venue, the wonderful World Cafe Live home of WXPNs famed radio broadcast .

Since 1956, there has been a sort of multi media show at Lord and Taylors. Dancing water fountains, organ music, lights, moving figures and narrative present a Christmas story that no one can remember afterwards, though it is wonderful to watch. Children sit on the floor of the Grand Court and watch the story played out on the four story high velvet curtain of the Grand Court atrium.

The Liberty Bell symbol of Americas freedom resides at The Liberty Bell Centre. You will find video presentations and exhibits on the origin of the famous bell in a dozen languages here. A bell for the Pennsylvania State House was cast in London, England, however, it cracked soon after it arrived in Philadelphia.

Local craftsmen John Pass and John Stow cast a new bell in 1753, using metal from the English bell. The bell was repaired in 1846 and rang for a George Washington birthday celebration. The bell weighs about 2000 pounds. It is made of 70 percent copper, 25 percent tin and small amounts of lead, zinc, arsenic, gold and silver. It hangs from what is believed to be its original yoke, made from American elm.

In 1751 the Speaker of the Pennsylvania Assembly ordered a new bell for the state House and asked that a Bible verse be inscribed PROCLAIM LIBERTY THROUGHOUT ALL THE LAND UNTO ALL THE INHABITANTS THEREOF. The bell has rang many times when public announcements were made, but in 1776 it rang for the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence.
