Locating A First Class Set of Golf Clubs - By: Justin Flowers, Posted on: 2008-04-27

Do you know how to choose the right set of golf clubs? Given the huge variety of golf clubs available now, making a selection can be difficult. Golfing news is filled with reviews of the latest golf club designs and components, and they each come with a guarantee to make every new player a pro. Having the right set of golf clubs can be essential to your personal performance on the golf course. The right set of golf clubs can provide you with the poise and the capability to play as well as you are able.

Novice golfers who are searching for a starter set of golf clubs should give some thought to purchasing good-quality clubs on the resale market instead of settling for cheap new clubs. It would also be a good idea to get suggestions from a golf instructor. But, even after you've taken recommendations and read all the golf club reviews, there are several personal factors to consider. An individuals size, strength, shape and method of play should be considered when choosing golf clubs.

A standard set of golf clubs is composed of irons, woods and a putter. Irons are numbered from two through nine. Faces of the irons are set at an angle to provide lift. The number two iron has a lift angle of 18°, which is increased by four degrees for every successive iron. The golf club shaft also gets shorter as the numbers go up; which means, the shaft of a two iron is longer than the shaft of a nine iron. Woods are numbered from one through five. The general rule is that lower numbered clubs hit the ball a greater distance, but at a lower angle. In addition to extra lift, higher numbered clubs also create more backspin on the golf ball.

Let us talk about the irons. Traditional irons concentrate the weight of the club behind the middle of the head. This concentration of weight creates what is known as the sweet spot, the best spot on the club to make contact with the ball. Traditional irons are the choice of players on the tour because of their great accuracy and control. However, if you don't hit the golf ball exactly on the sweet spot, these golf clubs are simply merciless.

It is also an idea to buy irons with a peripheral weight design. These are also known as cavity-backed golf clubs. The weight is distributed evenly around the edges, which increases the effective hitting area of the golf club. Cavity-backed golf clubs are much more forgiving. They are mainly designed for beginners or inconsistent players. But cavity-backed clubs are also seen on the pro golf circuits as well. So if this design really works well for you, don't let the name "game improvement" club frighten you off.

Woods are called that because they were customarily constructed of wood. Woods are designed for initial drives or for long fairway shots. Traditional wooden drivers are still preferred by many golf professionals. Alas, much like conventional irons, these woods are completely intolerant if your contact with the ball isn't perfect. This is exactly why woods made of metal now rule the amateur game. Today's woods are constructed with hollow shells that give greater distribution of weight. The only shortcoming of these new designs is that it may be harder to shape or control the ball. Graphite heads offer the greatest performance, but also have the highest price.

How much the shafts bend or flex varies among golf clubs from soft to stiff. Usually, stronger players who are better at the game should choose stiffer shafts. Most golf club shafts are constructed of graphite or steel.

Putters are probably the most personal item in the bag of golf clubs. Putters range from very plain to exotic designs. If you acquire a complete set of golf clubs, it will probably come with a basic putter. Eventually, you should probably swap this standard putter for a design that's more compatible with your playing style. This is something that may take some time. But after playing a few rounds and spending time in practice, you should come across one that is right for you.
