How Powerful Are Brainwaves - And What Exactly Are They? - By: Kevin Sinclair, Posted on: 2008-01-13

Throughout every single minute of your life, your brain is constantly on the go and producing a series of electrical impulses. The speed of the current generated can be measured in Hertz (HZ) with an electroencephalogram, known in short, as an EEG.

Your various states of mind can affect these measurements at any given time. For example, if you are feeling very sleepy chilled out or even worried or afraid about something these feelings can be seen in your brainwave frequencies. The velocity of the frequencies can be divided into four broad groups which have been researched and accepted, and details of which are listed below.

ALPHA WAVES - 8Hz to 13Hz.
These equate to a state of light meditation and are common when you are daydreaming, increasing in strength if you have your eyes closed. A prevalence of Alpha waves is linked to accelerated learning, your skills of focusing and improved creativeness. When you focus on a subject, be it your work or a leisure pursuit these characteristics will heighten your output and at the same time increase your know how.

BETA WAVES - 14Hz to 20Hz.
Beta waves are associated with normal day to day waking consciousness. It is these waves that are present when activities in the outside world are being paid attention to.

DELTA WAVES - 5Hz to 3Hz.
Delta waves are those linked to, and found in, a state of deep sleep or even when you are unconscious. They are also present during deep states of meditation. If you suffer from time to time with insomnia and have real difficulty getting off to sleep at night, the CD's available on the market will help you as they target the Delta waves, easing you gently into a natural sleep and soon insomnia will be a thing of the past.

THETA WAVES - 4Hz to 7Hz.
Heightened levels of inspiration create these waves and they are also present with a state of deep meditation. You will experience sheer ecstasy when in a state of deep meditation. Once your Theta waves are increased you are well on the journey to this condition. You will be able to cast off your connection to the material body and the deepest feeling of relaxation will be upon you. In this state you can concentrate solely on the inner you.

Recent studies have shown that an even deeper meditative condition can take place during predominant Delta wave presence. As you become more experienced and at ease with meditation, you may want to try to achieve Delta state during one of your sessions.
