Are You Part of The Pack? Uniforms in The Workplace - By: Josh Stone, Posted on: 2008-01-17

The very word uniform has many meanings. On the one hand it means a set of clothing that members of a particular company or organization wear, like work uniform shirts and trousers or skirts. The other meaning of the word is to remain the same, or not change in anyway. The significance of not changing or not varying is very much apparent if you consider uniforms as articles of clothing. Going as far back as ancient times uniforms were used to demonstrate a sense of solidarity. The Roman Army, for example, was a shining example of how uniforms were used back in ancient times.

In present times, our armies and police forces still wear special uniforms. Apart from standing out of the crowd, these uniforms have also become a focal point for the citizens of a country to identify authority figures and protectors. They are easily recognizable and the mere presence of a uniformed police officer can change the setting or mood very quickly. Uniforms are also sometimes mandated by organizations, especially large department stores or hotels. It is not altogether uncommon to find organizations whose business models require significant customer interaction to have their staff wear uniforms. At the very least, some organizations will insist on staff wearing work uniform shirts.

So why is this done? Here are a few of the reasons that uniforms are used today: In the customer service industries, like in large department stores, a uniform will make a member of the organization more easily identifiable. Customers will instinctively be able to identify and approach staff members to ask for assistance.

In large organizations, it is sometimes a perk for staff members to receive a uniform. This means the staff member saves considerable time and money on picking out clothes to wear into the work place. Having work uniform shirts or jackets and trousers assigned to him means he doesn't need to spend time deciding what he should wear. Nor does he have to worry about buying new work clothes. All that is taken care of.

Wearing a uniform to work gives people a sense of belonging. They know that all members of staff are treated the same and are all united to providing their respective service as a team. It fosters the growth of team spirit, it gives a sense of being united to work towards a common goal. Work uniforms and their use have countless advantages and is a tradition that has been followed for hundreds of thousands of years. It has secured a firm foothold in the business world and is unlikely to change any time soon.
