Airsoft guns are also known as soft air guns. The guns are powered using spring, electricity or gas. They can fire small spherical bullets which are made of plastic and are 6 mm or 8 mm in diameter. Airsoft guns are not suitable for games if they are cheap and not powerful as per the requirement. There are companies which are coming up with least expensive Airsoft guns as well. The expensive models are usually preferred by professionals and are used because of the reliability and accuracy of the guns.

Airsoft guns are available that are replicas of actual firearms. The cheap models of Airsoft guns are but not exact replicas of firearms. They are reduced models or caricatures of original firearms. Some airsoft models have never been to service or production. The major categories of airsoft guns are electric, gas and spring. The compressed gas inside the gun expands to propel the pellet in all the models of airsoft guns. Each of the type has its own advantages and disadvantages.

The pellet in a spring powered airsoft gun is propelled down the barrel of the gun using the potential energy stored in the spring of the gun. They are single shot devices. They are not suitable for the automatic firing of gun. The user will have to cock the gun each time before firing a shot. The ordinary spring powered airsoft guns are not as powerful as the electric and gas models of airsoft guns. When the expensive models are used, they are capable of giving high performance. Gas powered guns use the pressurized gas stored inside the guns to propel the pellets. They can be used for automatic firing of guns. Green gas is commonly used in gas powered airsoft guns. Electric airsoft guns are of many types. They are automatic electric guns, hybrid, low powered airsoft guns etc. the main method of functioning of airsoft guns of electric models are by using rechargeable batteries. This will cycle the internal piston to propel the pellets. They can be of automatic of semi automatic forms.
Airsoft guns have to be handled with care. The barrels must be cleaned properly after every use. This should be done without any fail especially when used in sandy environments. The strength of the magazine of airsoft guns can be emptied to preserve the strength of the spring. Non-corroisive silicon sprays can be sprayed to the barrel of the gun. This has to be done on a regular basis. Batteries are another part of airsoft guns that are to be handled with care. The batteries must not be charged too heavily.
Airsoft guns from different manufactures might have different properties as well. Anyway they are bound to follow the intellectual property laws. Some of the companies are found not to follow this law in their gun manufacture. Certain companies manufacture guns by licensing from other original manufactures.
Airsoft guns can be damaged with the paints peeling off. There can be scratching on the gun which will wear off the paints. Touch ups are not recommended in such situations. If a repainting is required, a spray paint can be used. This must be a full repaint to ensure the longevity of the gun. There are retailers who are offering painting services for airsoft guns. Such a repainting will bring back the original appearance of airsoft guns. Frequent checking of the guns has to be made to extend the life of the guns. If not the gun will get damage easily, especially when they are cheap.
